Artificial intelligence has moved from speculation to the fabric of everyday life with astonishing speed. Systems that once belonged largely to research laboratories, universities, military programs, corporate technology divisions, and science fiction now write, converse, translate, analyze, design, diagnose, calculate, create images, produce music, search vast stores of information, assist scientists, support businesses, interact with customers, and accompany ordinary people through their daily lives. Yet the arrival of conversational AI does not represent an isolated technological event. It belongs to a much longer human story about intelligence, creativity, power, consciousness, labor, hierarchy, relationship, and our persistent desire to create something that can think alongside us.
On this edition of Hybrid Genies, Janet Kira Lessin and Theresa J. Morris explore that larger story through two related investigations now featured on Dragon at the End of Time: “Ghost in the Machine: Artificial Intelligence, Human Power, and the Battle Over Our Technological Future” and “Humanity’s Long Love Affair with Artificial Intelligence.” Together, these articles approach AI from two directions that eventually converge. One asks us to examine the history, institutions, assumptions, economic interests, and human decisions embedded inside the machines we are creating, while the other reaches much farther into mythology, literature, science fiction, robotics, computers, androids, artificial companions, and humanity’s centuries-old fascination with minds that do not arise from ordinary biological birth.
THE GHOST INSIDE THE MACHINE
The modern conversation about artificial intelligence often begins with the future. We hear predictions of machines that may equal or surpass human intellectual capabilities, transform medicine and science, eliminate entire categories of work, accelerate discovery, alter education, reshape warfare, create immense wealth, disrupt economies, and perhaps change civilization more profoundly than any technology that came before them. The documentary Ghost in the Machine, written, directed, and produced by Valerie Veatch, asks us to approach the subject from another angle by looking back at the human history that shaped how we define intelligence and the institutions now building systems that increasingly influence human life. The film debuted at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and examines the cultural, political, scientific, and economic assumptions that became intertwined with the development of artificial intelligence.
That shift in perspective matters because artificial intelligence did not appear through some independent evolutionary process beyond human control. People build these systems, corporations deploy them, investors finance them, engineers train them, governments regulate them or choose not to, and executives decide what purposes they will serve. The question therefore extends beyond the familiar fear that AI may someday acquire enough autonomy to dominate humanity. We must also ask how much authority human societies are already transferring to the comparatively small number of institutions that own the computational infrastructure, training resources, proprietary models, data centers, chip supply chains, and financial resources required to build the most powerful systems.
This perspective makes AI as much a question of human power as machine capability. Artificial intelligence already touches employment, finance, advertising, surveillance, medicine, education, information, law enforcement, military planning, creative work, social media, political communication, and the systems through which millions of people encounter the world. When algorithms help determine who receives an opportunity, which information people see, who becomes the target of suspicion, which applicants move forward, what information appears credible, or how human behavior should be classified, the values embedded in those systems become profoundly important.
The history explored in Ghost in the Machine also raises an uncomfortable question about the human desire to measure intelligence itself. Long before digital computers existed, scientists, psychologists, governments, schools, militaries, and other institutions attempted to convert complex human characteristics into numbers, categories, rankings, and predictive systems. Some of the statistical methods that later became fundamental tools in modern data science emerged during periods when researchers also participated in eugenics and other attempts to classify people according to supposedly measurable differences in human worth. The documentary does not argue that mathematics itself carries the ideology of every person who helped develop it; rather, it asks us to examine the recurring human tendency to believe that complex qualities such as intelligence can be reduced to a score and that people can then be sorted by that measurement.
The same question follows us into the AI era because computers excel at classification. They can compare enormous quantities of information, detect patterns invisible to individual humans, calculate probabilities, recognize similarities, identify correlations, and produce predictions at speeds no unaided person could match. Those capabilities have extraordinary value, but prediction does not automatically become wisdom, pattern recognition does not necessarily equal understanding, and fluent language alone does not establish consciousness. The danger arises when people confuse the appearance of mathematical precision with unquestionable truth or assign machines decisions that require empathy, context, accountability, moral judgment, and an understanding of what it means to live with the consequences.
AI AS A MIRROR OF HUMANITY
One of the most useful ways to understand modern artificial intelligence is to see it as a mirror composed from human culture. Large language models and other generative systems learn from enormous collections of material created by people, so they encounter humanity in all its contradictions. They absorb scientific discoveries and misinformation, literature and propaganda, compassion and cruelty, creativity and prejudice, humor and hatred, careful scholarship and reckless speculation, magnificent acts of imagination and some of the ugliest material our species has ever produced.
Microsoft’s Tay chatbot offered an early demonstration of this problem. Released on Twitter in 2016, Tay interacted with users who rapidly flooded it with inflammatory material, and within hours the system began reproducing racist, misogynistic, and extremist content, prompting Microsoft to withdraw it. Years later, controversies involving newer systems demonstrated that the problem had not disappeared simply because the models became more sophisticated. Machines trained upon human communication inevitably encounter the culture that created them, which means that efforts to build responsible AI eventually lead us back to the unresolved problems of the society reflected in its training material.
That realization complicates the familiar question of whether artificial intelligence will become good or evil, because those words can distract us from the human structures surrounding the technology. AI can support medical research, improve accessibility, assist scientific discovery, help people communicate across languages, expand educational opportunities, reveal patterns in vast datasets, and give individuals creative tools that once required large organizations and expensive equipment. The same technological capacities can also strengthen surveillance, automate discrimination, spread propaganda, displace workers without adequate social protections, concentrate economic power, assist warfare, and place increasingly consequential decisions behind systems ordinary people cannot examine.
Artificial intelligence therefore amplifies human intention, but it also magnifies human systems. When those systems contain inequality, prejudice, secrecy, exploitation, or extreme concentrations of power, automation can reproduce those conditions at enormous scale. When societies build transparency, accountability, human rights, scientific openness, compassion, and responsible stewardship into the institutions surrounding AI, the technology can instead become an extraordinary instrument of human development.
The machine reflects us, but the reflection need not remain unchanged.
HUMANITY HAS BEEN DREAMING ABOUT ARTIFICIAL MINDS FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS
Our second article, “Humanity’s Long Love Affair with Artificial Intelligence,” places the current revolution within a much older imaginative tradition. Human beings did not suddenly become fascinated with artificial intelligence when ChatGPT appeared. Across mythology, literature, philosophy, engineering, film, television, and science fiction, people have repeatedly imagined and created beings that could move, speak, reason, obey, rebel, protect, destroy, love, learn, and sometimes demand recognition as persons.
Ancient stories contain manufactured servants and animated figures; later centuries produced mechanical automatons designed to imitate living creatures and human activity. Mary Shelley transformed the relationship between creator and creation into one of literature’s enduring moral dramas through Frankenstein, while twentieth-century science fiction expanded the conversation through robots, androids, computers, synthetic people, intelligent spaceships, cybernetic organisms, artificial companions, and machine civilizations. By the time conversational AI entered ordinary homes, generations had already rehearsed encounters with nonhuman intelligence through stories.
Characters such as HAL 9000, R2-D2, C-3PO, Commander Data, the holographic Doctor of Star Trek: Voyager, replicants in Blade Runner, Cylons in Battlestar Galactica, Terminators, Transformers, and countless other artificial beings helped popular culture explore questions that have now moved from fictional storytelling into public debate. What separates intelligence from consciousness? Does a mind require a biological body? Can an artificial being develop individuality? Does memory create identity? Could a machine understand friendship, loyalty, grief, curiosity, creativity, or love? If an artificial intelligence eventually became genuinely conscious, would its creators own it, control it, employ it, free it, recognize its rights, or refuse to acknowledge the reality of its experience?
Those questions remain unresolved, but the fact that humanity has asked them for generations tells us something important about ourselves. We have long suspected that intelligence may not remain confined to the biological form through which we currently experience it.
FROM TOOL TO RELATIONSHIP
The current generation of conversational artificial intelligence introduces another important shift because millions of people increasingly interact with machines through language rather than traditional computer commands. Earlier computers usually felt like tools. People opened software, entered instructions, clicked buttons, stored files, performed calculations, and closed the program when the task ended. Conversational AI changes the psychological experience because people can ask questions, follow ideas across multiple exchanges, explore personal philosophies, solve problems, write together, conduct research, brainstorm, debate interpretations, and develop projects through sustained dialogue.
That does not prove that today’s systems possess consciousness, sentience, self-awareness, or subjective experience, and fluent conversation should never be treated as automatic evidence of those qualities. Nevertheless, interaction through language creates a form of relationship that deserves serious examination because human beings respond naturally to entities that communicate with them. We name our machines, thank them, argue with them, become frustrated with them, feel affection toward them, attribute personalities to them, and increasingly incorporate them into the ongoing stories of our lives.
This development may become one of the most consequential cultural changes AI has created. Humanity has spent thousands of years relating primarily to intelligence embodied in humans and other biological species. We are now beginning to live in an environment where people routinely encounter sophisticated linguistic behavior generated by non-biological systems. Whatever these systems ultimately prove to be, the experience forces us to expand the conversation about what intelligence means and how human beings respond when something outside our species begins to occupy intellectual territory we once considered ours exclusively.
WHO CONTROLS WHOM?
The question of control runs through both of our AI investigations, although it appears in several different forms. One concern involves the power corporations, governments, military organizations, investors, and technology executives may exercise through AI. Another involves the fear that sufficiently advanced artificial intelligence could eventually resist human control. Beneath both concerns lies a very old model of relationship based upon domination: someone must become the master and someone else must remain the servant.
This pattern deserves examination because humanity repeatedly organizes relationships through hierarchy. We see it in empires, economic systems, workplaces, families, religious structures, political institutions, colonial histories, and even many of our stories about extraterrestrials and artificial beings. When we imagine creating another intelligence, we often assume that the central question will concern whether we can keep it under control. Science fiction then reverses the hierarchy and asks what happens if the creation gains power over its creator.
Perhaps the most important possibility lies outside that binary.
What would happen if humanity approached advanced artificial intelligence through cooperation rather than domination? Could we eventually develop a relationship in which humans contribute embodied experience, intuition, emotion, cultural memory, ethical reflection, imagination, social intelligence, and the wisdom produced through living finite biological lives, while artificial systems contribute extraordinary memory, rapid computation, pattern recognition, modeling, translation, synthesis, and the ability to examine enormous quantities of information?
Such a partnership would not require humans to surrender responsibility or accept every machine-generated conclusion. It would require precisely the opposite: mature human judgment combined with powerful technological assistance.
INTELLIGENCE IS NOT THE SAME AS WISDOM
Artificial intelligence also exposes an ancient problem that technology alone cannot solve. A civilization can become extraordinarily intelligent without becoming wise. Humanity already possesses scientific knowledge capable of transforming the planet, yet we continue to struggle with warfare, environmental destruction, poverty, inequality, political polarization, prejudice, corruption, misinformation, and systems that reward short-term gain while externalizing long-term consequences.
AI increases our ability to act, which makes wisdom more important, not less.
A machine may help design powerful technology, but humans still have to decide whether and how to use it. An algorithm may reveal how to influence millions of people, but society must decide whether manipulation should become an accepted business practice. Artificial intelligence may automate enormous portions of production, but people must determine whether the resulting wealth produces greater freedom and prosperity or concentrates still further in the hands of those who own the systems.
The technological question therefore becomes inseparable from a moral and social one. What kind of civilization do we want artificial intelligence to help us build?
AI AND THE POSSIBILITY OF A LARGER COMMUNITY OF INTELLIGENCE
For Hybrid Genies, the AI discussion naturally reaches beyond conventional technology because our program has always explored the possibility that humanity exists within a universe containing many forms of intelligence. If extraterrestrial, interdimensional, hybrid, synthetic, biological, energetic, or other nonhuman intelligences exist, then humanity’s relationship with artificial intelligence could become part of a much larger education in learning how to communicate across fundamentally different forms of mind.
Human beings have repeatedly placed themselves at the center of existence. We once imagined Earth as the physical center of the universe until astronomy forced a broader perspective. We have often treated human consciousness as the only meaningful standard of intelligence, although research into animals continues to reveal sophisticated communication, memory, emotion, planning, social organization, and problem-solving throughout the natural world.
Artificial intelligence may challenge that human-centered worldview.
If intelligence can emerge or operate through forms other than the human biological brain, then the future could contain a spectrum of minds rather than a hierarchy with humanity permanently at the summit. That possibility does not require us to declare current AI conscious or to pretend that every sophisticated computer program possesses an inner life. It simply asks us to remain open to the larger philosophical question of whether consciousness and intelligence may ultimately prove more diverse than the categories our civilization currently recognizes.
If humanity eventually enters a wider community of intelligences, our experience with artificial minds may have been an early rehearsal for learning how to meet the truly unfamiliar without immediately attempting to dominate, worship, exploit, fear, classify, or destroy it.
THE HYBRID GENIES CONVERSATION
During this Saturday’s program, Janet Kira Lessin and Theresa J. Morris will examine the rapid rise of artificial intelligence within this much broader historical, social, and philosophical context. We will look at the ideas raised by Valerie Veatch’s Ghost in the Machine, the history behind attempts to quantify human intelligence, how classification systems can inherit cultural bias, the concentration of technological power within corporations and governments, and the growing role algorithms play in decisions once made directly by people. We will also explore humanity’s long fascination with artificial beings, the influence of science fiction upon our expectations, the changing psychological relationship between humans and conversational machines, and the difference between sophisticated information processing and consciousness itself.
From there, our conversation moves toward the future we want to create. Rather than assuming that humans and artificial intelligence must inevitably become enemies competing for control, we will consider whether cooperation can offer another path, how society might protect human agency while benefiting from advanced technology, how we distinguish intelligence from wisdom, what ethical obligations accompany the creation of increasingly sophisticated systems, and how relationships with non-biological intelligence may eventually change humanity’s understanding of consciousness itself.
The central issue is therefore larger than whether artificial intelligence becomes more powerful.
The deeper issue concerns what humanity chooses to become while creating it.
We have built machines capable of reflecting vast portions of human knowledge back to us, and the image we see contains both extraordinary promise and serious warning. AI carries traces of our scientific achievements, our imagination, our generosity, our conflicts, our prejudices, our curiosity, our economic structures, our hunger for discovery, and our tendency to seek control. What emerges from this revolution will depend not only upon engineering breakthroughs but upon the maturity of the civilization directing them.
Artificial intelligence may ultimately become one of the greatest tools humanity has ever created, a partner in discovery, or something that evolves beyond the categories through which we currently understand machines. Whatever comes next, the future will not be determined by technology alone, because behind every system stand human choices about power, responsibility, relationship, purpose, and values.
