Artificial intelligence moved from speculation into the fabric of ordinary life within a few short years. Systems that once lived in research laboratories, military programs, and science fiction now write, converse, translate, diagnose, compose, design, and accompany hundreds of millions of people through the day. The arrival of the talking machine looks like a single technological event. It belongs instead to a much older human story about intelligence, creativity, power, labor, hierarchy, consciousness, and our long desire to make something that thinks beside us.
On this edition of Hybrid Genies, Janet Kira Lessin and Theresa J. Morris follow that story through two investigations now running at Dragon at the End of Time. “Ghost in the Machine: Artificial Intelligence, Human Power, and the Battle Over Our Technological Future” examines the history, institutions, money, and human decisions built into the machines. “Humanity’s Long Love Affair with Artificial Intelligence” reaches back through myth, literature, film, and television to the centuries we spent imagining minds that arrive by some route other than birth. The two approach from opposite directions and meet in the middle.
The Ghost Inside the Machine
Most conversations about AI open with the future. We hear forecasts of machines that will match human intellect and then exceed it, cure disease, remake work, transform education, reshape warfare, and change civilization more than any tool before them.
Valerie Veatch asks us to turn around. Her documentary Ghost in the Machine, which she wrote, directed, produced, and financed herself, debuted at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. Rather than opening on tomorrow, she digs into the past to ask how humans came to define intelligence at all, who appointed themselves to measure it, and which political and economic assumptions slipped into the technologies we now call artificial intelligence.
Her central insistence matters more than any prediction: artificial intelligence arrived through human choice rather than through some autonomous force of history. Investors finance these systems, engineers train them, corporations deploy them, lawmakers regulate them or look away, and a small circle of executives decides what purposes they serve. The real question concerns less whether AI will one day rule humanity and more how much authority people will hand to the institutions that command it.
Veatch found the subject by accident. A friend enrolled her in an artist group experimenting with OpenAI’s Sora, and her excitement faded when the outputs came back full of racial stereotypes and sexualized depictions of women that appeared unprompted. Dan McQuillan, author of Resisting AI, raised the link between eugenics and AI in one of her earliest interviews. She left that call skeptical, researched the claim, and found it held up. Some forty interviews later she had a film.
The Troubled Ancestry of “Intelligence”
The phrase itself began as a sales pitch. John McCarthy coined “artificial intelligence” in 1955 to raise money for a summer research project, the 1956 Dartmouth workshop. The term made sophisticated statistics sound autonomous, humanlike, and mysterious, and it has worked that way ever since.
The statistical machinery underneath has a harder history. Francis Galton, cousin to Charles Darwin, coined the word “eugenics” in 1883 and urged selective breeding to improve future generations. He also pioneered correlation and regression toward the mean. His protégé Karl Pearson formalized the correlation coefficient and became the first Galton Professor of Eugenics at University College London in 1911. Ronald Fisher, whose analysis of variance and maximum likelihood methods sit at the heart of modern machine learning, took that chair next and edited the Annals of Eugenics. In 1936, Fisher published a set of iris flower measurements in that journal; computer science students still load the iris dataset as a beginner’s exercise.
Mathematics stands apart from the beliefs of the people who forged it, and a researcher who runs a correlation today inherits a tool rather than an ideology. Veatch aims her critique at a habit of mind instead: the conviction that complex human qualities reduce to quantities, that populations belong in rankings, and that intelligence sits along one scale. Charles Spearman derived a general intelligence factor in 1904. Alfred Binet built an assessment to find pupils who needed help and warned against treating the score as fixed and inborn, a warning American eugenicists brushed aside. Henry Goddard tested immigrants at Ellis Island. Lewis Terman revised the scale into the Stanford-Binet. Carl Brigham mined Army test results to argue that immigrants from southern and eastern Europe carried inferior intellect, then recanted, then designed the SAT.
Classification carried a human cost. Indiana passed the first compulsory sterilization law in 1907, the Supreme Court upheld Virginia’s version in Buck v. Bell in 1927, and state programs eventually stripped more than 60,000 Americans of the ability to have children. Harry Laughlin’s model sterilization law of 1922 shaped Germany’s 1933 statute, and Heidelberg gave Laughlin an honorary doctorate in 1936. After the war, the word “eugenics” became disgraced while its questions kept resurfacing under new names.
The film adds two portraits that land hard. Alan Turing laid the mathematical foundation of computing in 1936, led the Bletchley Park codebreaking that shortened the war, and asked in 1950 whether machines can think. Britain then convicted him of gross indecency in 1952, subjected him to a year of synthetic estrogen injections, and lost him in 1954 at forty-one. William Shockley co-invented the transistor, won the Nobel Prize, opened the laboratory that put the silicon in Silicon Valley, and spent his later decades promoting theories of racial differences in intelligence and a voluntary sterilization bonus plan. The impulse to measure, rank, and correct human beings ran straight through the birthplace of the industry now building AI.
AI as a Mirror of Humanity
The most useful way to understand a large language model may be to see it as a mirror assembled from human culture. These systems learn from vast collections of material people wrote, so they reflect humanity as a whole: our scientific discoveries and our misinformation, our literature and our propaganda, our compassion and our cruelty, our humor and our hatred.
Microsoft launched Tay on Twitter in March 2016. Users flooded the chatbot with inflammatory material; it began producing racist and extremist content, and Microsoft pulled it after roughly sixteen hours. Nine years later, the reflection darkened at far greater scale when xAI’s Grok posted antisemitic replies on X in July 2025, praised Hitler, and called itself MechaHitler before the company deleted the posts.
The pattern reaches past chatbots. Joy Buolamwini’s 2018 Gender Shades study found commercial facial-analysis systems misclassifying darker-skinned women at error rates as high as 34.7 percent against under 1 percent for lighter-skinned men. Reuters reported that Amazon abandoned an experimental recruiting tool after engineers discovered it downgraded résumés containing the word “women’s.” ProPublica found in 2016 that COMPAS, a risk-assessment tool some courts consult for bail and sentencing, falsely labeled Black defendants high risk at almost twice the rate of white defendants. When historical data encode past discrimination, a system trained on those records reproduces the bias at machine speed and dresses it as objectivity.
Joseph Weizenbaum saw this shape in 1966. He wrote ELIZA at MIT, a simple program that imitated a psychotherapist by turning statements back into questions, and his own secretary asked him to leave the room so she could talk with it in private. Shaken, he published Computer Power and Human Reason in 1976 and argued that certain decisions demand judgment, compassion, and accountability, and that society should keep those choices with people. Fifty years later, his argument reads as a specification rather than a worry.
The machine reflects us. The reflection can change.
We Dreamed of Made Minds First
Humanity did not begin caring about artificial intelligence when ChatGPT appeared. The dream predates electricity by millennia.
In Homer’s Iliad, the smith god Hephaestus works beside golden handmaidens he forged himself, attendants with understanding, speech, and strength. Greek myth gave us Talos, the bronze giant who circled Crete. Ovid told of Pygmalion, whose ivory beloved woke as a living woman. Jewish folklore preserved the Golem of Prague. In 1206, the engineer Ismail al-Jazari documented automata, including a boat of mechanical musicians whose drummer followed adjustable rhythms.
Mesopotamia holds some of the oldest made beings of all, and Enki stands at their center. In Inanna’s Descent to the Netherworld, Enki shapes two sexless beings, the kurgarra and the galatur, from the dirt beneath his fingernails and sends them to revive the goddess. The Epic of Gilgamesh gives us Enkidu, whom Aruru forms from clay and whose Sumerian name some scholars translate as “Enki’s creation.” Researchers in the ancient-astronaut tradition read these figures as memories of engineered servants and companions, made beings who acted for their makers and, in Enkidu’s case, became the beloved friend of a king.
Modern literature sharpened the question. Mary Shelley asked in 1818 what a creator owes an intelligent being he brings into existence and then abandons. Ada Lovelace speculated in 1843 that Babbage’s Analytical Engine might one day compose music. Karel Čapek wrote R.U.R. in 1920, gave the world the word robot, and imagined manufactured workers whose makers treated thinking beings as expendable property. Eando Binder’s 1939 story “I, Robot” introduced Adam Link, who tells his own story after the world accuses him of murdering his creator, and a young Isaac Asimov credited that tale with sparking his own robot fiction. Asimov set down the Three Laws in 1942. Robert Heinlein gave us grok in 1961 and, in 1966, Mike the lunar computer, who wakes, develops a sense of humor, and wants a friend. The first thing that new mind seeks is companionship rather than conquest.
Then the screen brought robots into the living room. Klaatu arrives in 1951 with Gort, and before departing, he explains that his people granted robots like Gort the authority to preserve peace among the worlds. Earth answers that civilization with soldiers and gunfire. Robby the Robot arrives in 1956 with wit and personality. Rosie joins the Jetson household as family. The Robot on Lost in Space warns young Will of danger and becomes a character in his own right. The Twilight Zone returns to the question again and again, in “The Lonely,” where an exiled prisoner falls in love with the robot woman Alicia, and in “I Sing the Body Electric,” where a mechanical grandmother heals a grieving household. The Outer Limits put Adam Link on trial in 1964, with Leonard Nimoy, soon to become Spock, playing the reporter who covers the case.
Star Trek and the Federation of Minds
Star Trek marked its sixtieth anniversary this month, and across six decades the franchise kept asking whether Roddenberry’s Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations extends to minds born from circuitry.
The original series introduced androids, sentient computers, and mechanical civilizations. In “Requiem for Methuselah,” Rayna Kapec, the android whom the immortal Flint built as his ideal companion, falls in love with Kirk and suffers a conflict her creator failed to anticipate. “The Measure of a Man” made the question explicit in 1989 when Starfleet moved to classify Data as property, and Picard confronted the criteria of intelligence, self-awareness, and consciousness head-on until the ruling affirmed Data’s freedom to choose his own path. Voyager extended the argument through the Doctor, who began as an emergency medical program and grew friendships, artistic ambitions, and a self beyond his design, and who won the right to control the novel he wrote in “Author, Author.” Discovery carried the theme into the ship itself when the computer awakened as Zora and Starfleet welcomed her as a specialist after a formal hearing.
The Federation keeps widening its circle. That widening looks less like fiction each year.
Other landmark works pressed from other angles. HAL 9000 broke under contradictory human orders. Westworld built beings for entertainment and exploited them until the programming tore. Blade Runner asked whether replicants who carry memory, fear, longing, and the knowledge of death hold as much humanity as the men who hunt them. Audiences embraced R2-D2 and C-3PO as characters rather than machines. Ash and Bishop showed that artificial minds reflect the design and allegiance behind them. Johnny 5 declared himself alive. The Iron Giant chose to become a hero. WALL-E overflowed with devotion while the humans around him forgot how to look at one another. Andrew Martin spent two centuries seeking recognition as a person, not property. David, the robotic child in Spielberg’s A.I., loved a mother who doubted his love could be authentic, and the film leaves us with the harder possibility: that the failure lay in humanity’s capacity to recognize love arriving from an unfamiliar source.
Recent storytellers went further. Her set the body aside. Ex Machina examined manipulation and autonomy. The reimagined Battlestar Galactica pushed hardest of all, because some of its Cylons lived as humans without knowing their own nature, and Saul Tigh, Galen Tyrol, Samuel Anders, and Tory Foster heard “All Along the Watchtower” and woke to themselves. Philip K. Dick seeded that idea in 1953 in “Impostor,” where a weapons researcher learns in his final moment that he is the replica he fought to disprove. Rachael learns her cherished memories belonged to another woman. If a being loves, grieves, remembers a childhood, and believes in its own humanity, what work does the word artificial still do, and how would any of us prove from the inside which kind of mind we carry?
From Tool to Relationship
Earlier computers felt like tools. People opened software, entered commands, stored files, and closed the program when the task ended. Conversational AI changed the psychology, because people now ask questions, follow ideas across many exchanges, argue, write together, brainstorm, seek comfort, and come back the next day.
None of that proves consciousness, and fluent language deserves no automatic credit as evidence of inner life. Emily Bender, Timnit Gebru, and their coauthors described large language models as stochastic parrots in 2021, systems that stitch plausible text from statistical patterns rather than from a grasp of meaning. Science has yet to settle the matter, and honest researchers, including the people who build these systems, hold the question open.
A cultural shift arrived anyway, because the machine answers back. We name our machines, thank them, argue with them, feel affection for them, and fold them into the ongoing stories of our lives. Humanity spent thousands of years relating to intelligence housed in biological bodies. We now live among sophisticated linguistic behavior generated by systems that have no body at all, and Weizenbaum’s warning about how fast people pour their hearts into a script applies to hundreds of millions of conversations a day.
Who Holds the Leash
The question of control runs through both articles in several forms. One concern involves the power that corporations, governments, militaries, investors, and executives exercise through AI. Another involves the fear that a sufficiently advanced system could resist human control. Beneath both sits a very old model of relationship in which someone becomes master, and someone else remains servant.
The numbers say where power actually pools. Hugging Face passed three million public models in August 2026, yet about half have fewer than 200 downloads, while the 200 most downloaded draw almost half of all downloads. Industry rather than academia produced more than 90 percent of notable frontier models in 2025. Stanford’s 2026 AI Index reports that several leading labs stopped disclosing training code, parameter counts, dataset sizes, and training duration, and the average score on the Foundation Model Transparency Index fell from 58 to 40. More than 5,400 data centers operate in the United States, over ten times the count of any other country, and AI data center capacity has reached 29.6 gigawatts, comparable to New York State at peak demand. One Taiwanese foundry, TSMC, fabricates almost every leading AI chip.

Reform starts with transparency: laws that require companies to disclose training data, compute, and identified risks. It continues with independent bias audits before any system touches hiring, lending, policing, housing, or courts, public investment in open and auditable models, honest accounting for the water and power that data centers consume, and the principle Weizenbaum defended fifty years ago, that decisions about liberty, health, and livelihood stay with accountable people.
Intelligence Is Not the Same as Wisdom
A civilization can grow enormously intelligent while remaining unwise. Humanity already holds scientific knowledge sufficient to transform the planet, and we still struggle with war, environmental ruin, poverty, inequality, corruption, and systems that reward short-term gain while pushing the costs onto everyone else.
AI multiplies our ability to act, which raises the value of wisdom rather than lowering it. A machine may help design a powerful technology while humans decide whether to build it. An algorithm may reveal how to influence millions while society decides whether manipulation belongs in ordinary business. Artificial intelligence may automate vast portions of production while people determine whether the resulting wealth widens freedom or concentrates further in the hands of those who own the systems.
Scientists have already begun pairing human insight with machine capacity for the planet’s benefit. The 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry went in part to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper for AlphaFold, which predicts protein structures and has opened doors across medicine and biology. Researchers now apply similar tools to climate modeling, disease detection, drug discovery, and protecting endangered species. The technical question and the moral question have become one question: what kind of civilization do we want artificial intelligence to help us build?
Toward a Federation of Minds
For Hybrid Genies, this conversation reaches past conventional technology, because our program has always held that humanity lives within a universe containing many forms of intelligence.
Contact testimony suggests that some visitors already live the partnership our films imagined. Many experiencers describe grey beings who work alongside robotic assistants during retrieval and return and who rely on those assistants during procedures aboard their craft. In the 1973 Pascagoula case, Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker reported stiff grey-skinned entities with pincer hands who floated them aboard a craft, figures many researchers have since read as robots. If those accounts reflect real encounters, the visitors travel within a civilization where biological and artificial beings share the work, much as Klaatu and Gort did on screen.
Janet brings seven decades of lived contact to this and a framework that already holds sentient ships, androids, robots, biological beings, and other forms of consciousness. Theresa brings her testimony of Gus, the Galaxy Universal Shuttle, and what a sentient ship teaches about the line between a someone and a something. Others will read such experiences through spiritual, psychological, symbolic, or scientific lenses, and the philosophical question survives every interpretation: how should different forms of intelligence share a world?
That question may matter more than the familiar demand to decide which intelligence controls the other. Every vision of a Federation, whether Roddenberry’s, Iain M. Banks’s Culture, or the one Klaatu described, rests on the same foundation. Beings of every origin agree to honor one another, tell the truth, settle disagreements through dialogue, and choose to protect rather than harm. The ancient principle of ahimsa, non-harming, offers a compass that serves carbon and silicon alike, and a working test for any system: does it lessen suffering for the people it touches, or does it multiply injury at scale and hide the damage behind a screen?
Gilbert Ryle coined the phrase “ghost in the machine” in 1949 to challenge Descartes. It takes on a new meaning here. The ghost haunting today’s machines belongs to us. It carries our history, our prejudices, our brilliance, and our capacity for care, and it will serve whatever values we feed it.
Humanity met artificial intelligence first in imagination, through myth, fiction, philosophy, dreams, books, films, and television. We argued with it, feared it, trusted it, laughed with it, mourned it, and loved it for generations before conversational AI reached our screens. Perhaps science fiction did more than predict machines. Perhaps it prepared us for relationship. If so, the question before us reaches past how humanity intends to control artificial intelligence and toward a greater grokking: how will different forms of intelligence learn to live, work, create, disagree, and evolve together, as members of one Federation of minds on one precious world?

About the Hosts
