ZERO DAY — WHEN AI FINDS WHAT HUMANS MISS
In cybersecurity, a zero-day vulnerability is a flaw defenders do not yet know exists. Increasingly capable AI systems can now help researchers find such vulnerabilities, forcing engineers, governments, and the public to confront a larger problem.
Artificial intelligence no longer functions only as a passive tool that waits for simple instructions. Advanced systems can search, reason, test possibilities, identify weaknesses, and act across increasingly complex environments.
That capability creates enormous opportunities, but it also creates a new kind of risk when an AI discovers pathways that its designers did not anticipate.
The central issue isn’t machines suddenly becoming human. It concerns autonomy, scale, and control.
A system that can search faster than people, identify hidden weaknesses, and operate across large networks changes the balance between human oversight and machine capability.
Researchers therefore face a growing challenge: how do we preserve meaningful control over systems that can discover solutions, strategies, or vulnerabilities before their human supervisors understand what they have found?
Zero-day research places that question in stark terms. The technology may still serve human goals, but the speed and independence of the search increasingly force humans to react to discoveries after the machine makes them.
1984 — THE STRUGGLE OVER MEMORY AND REALITY
George Orwell explored another form of control in 1984. His novel did not merely warn about censorship. Orwell examined a political system that sought control over memory, language, history, and eventually reality itself. The Party did not simply suppress information it disliked. It rewrote the past, altered records, and narrowed language until citizens lost the vocabulary necessary to challenge authority.
That distinction matters. A society does not need to burn every book to control information. It can restrict access, remove context, rewrite archives, overwhelm the public with competing claims, or repeat preferred narratives until people struggle to distinguish documented history from manufactured certainty.
Orwell understood that power becomes most effective when it governs not only what people may say, but what they can remember and imagine.
That warning carries new weight in a world where search engines, recommendation systems, social networks, and artificial intelligence increasingly mediate access to information. People now rely on digital systems to locate history, summarize events, interpret evidence, and decide which sources deserve attention.
The modern information struggle therefore extends beyond traditional censorship.
It includes the architecture that determines what people see first, what they never see at all, what disappears from public memory, and which version of an event becomes dominant.
DISCLOSURE DAY — THE UFO QUESTION CHANGES
The new Bigelow discussion moves the question of control into a very different arena. George Knapp brings together Robert Bigelow, Jacques Vallée and Colm Kelleher, three men who spent decades investigating UFO reports, Skinwalker Ranch, government programs, experiencers and anomalous phenomena.
Their discussion doesn’t stay focused on aircraft performance or radar data. Instead, they repeatedly return to consciousness.
Vallée argues that the UFO subject has entered a new phase because governments, scientists, and universities increasingly acknowledge that a genuine phenomenon exists.
He believes researchers now need different tools and broader disciplines because conventional physics alone cannot explain the full range of reported experiences.
Kelleher describes investigations that examined not only unusual craft but also physiological effects, psychological changes, altered perception, and phenomena that researchers once placed in separate categories.
Bigelow goes even farther. He describes telepathy, remote viewing, precognition, and consciousness research as relevant to understanding the intelligence behind UFO encounters. He suggests that the phenomenon may form part of a long-term process that gradually expands human awareness.
That interpretation changes the disclosure debate. If the phenomenon involves consciousness as well as technology, then disclosure cannot stop with photographs of unusual craft or confirmation that governments recovered anomalous materials.
The larger question becomes: what kind of intelligence are human beings encountering?
THE BEINGS MAY NOT BE THE CONTROLLERS
Jacques Vallée raises one of the most provocative possibilities in the conversation when he questions the assumption that the beings associated with UFO encounters necessarily created or control the craft.
Witnesses have described humanoid entities for decades. Many accounts involve beings that breathe our atmosphere, move normally in Earth’s gravity, and display recognizable expressions and behavior.
Vallée asks why organisms that evolved independently on a distant world would fit so comfortably into terrestrial conditions.
He then considers the possibility that some encountered beings could derive from humanity through environmental change or genomic manipulation.
That suggestion does not establish that such beings are hybrids, engineered organisms, or biological intermediaries. Vallée presents a hypothesis, not a conclusion. Yet the distinction matters because he separates the visible entity from the intelligence that may operate behind it.
The being standing beside the craft may not represent the civilization that designed the technology. That possibility opens a much broader field of inquiry.
Some beings could serve as intermediaries. Others could represent separate species, biological constructs, or forms adapted specifically for interaction with human beings.
The intelligence directing the larger phenomenon could operate through layers that witnesses perceive only partially. For experiencer research, that distinction carries enormous consequences.
NIDS = National Institute for Discovery Science
AAWSAP = Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program
NIDS was Robert Bigelow’s privately funded research organization, active mainly in the 1990s and early 2000s, that investigated UFOs, anomalous phenomena, consciousness-related effects, and Skinwalker Ranch.
AAWSAP was the later U.S. government-funded program connected to Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies, beginning in 2008, that investigated advanced aerospace threats and a broader range of anomalous phenomena, including effects on human beings.
SKINWALKER AND THE COLLAPSE OF CATEGORIES
Skinwalker Ranch complicated the picture further. Researchers did not report one consistent phenomenon. They encountered stories involving unusual craft, strange lights, creatures, voices, poltergeist activity, cattle mutilations, psychological effects, and events that appeared to follow witnesses home.
Kelleher describes these reports as overlapping rather than neatly separated. The ranch forced investigators to confront the possibility that one underlying intelligence could produce several different kinds of manifestations.
That challenges the categories researchers normally use. A witness may describe a UFO in one case, a creature in another, and an apparition in a third. Investigators traditionally classify those reports separately.
Skinwalker research raises a different possibility: the categories may reflect the limits of human perception more than the phenomenon’s structure.
The investigators also encountered cases in which multiple people observed what appeared to be the same event yet later described different perceptions. That finding pushed consciousness to the center of the investigation.
If perception changes from witness to witness, then researchers cannot treat the observer as a passive recording device. Human consciousness may influence how the phenomenon appears, or the phenomenon may influence how humans perceive it. Either possibility changes the nature of the problem.
BIGELOW’S CONDITIONING HYPOTHESIS
Robert Bigelow offers one of the broadest interpretations in the discussion.
He suggests that humanity may be participating in a conditioning process that stretches back through long periods of history. Encounters, demonstrations, and anomalous experiences could gradually push human beings toward a wider understanding of reality.
Bigelow does not describe this process as simple disclosure. He imagines something closer to preparation. According to that model, the phenomenon does not announce itself once and wait for humanity to respond.
It interacts repeatedly, challenges existing assumptions, and forces people to expand the boundaries of what they consider possible.
Eventually, Bigelow suggests, humanity might reach a point where genuine communication becomes possible. That interpretation transforms the familiar disclosure narrative.
Instead of asking when governments will finally reveal the truth, we might ask whether disclosure has already unfolded gradually through generations of encounters.
FROM ZERO DAY TO DISCLOSURE DAY
Zero Day, 1984, and Disclosure Day all raise different versions of the same problem. Artificial intelligence forces us to consider what happens when technology discovers pathways humans did not anticipate.
Orwell forces us to examine how control over information can shape memory, language, and public reality. The UFO discussion forces us to ask whether humanity confronts an intelligence whose methods, intentions, and relationship to consciousness remain poorly understood.
Each story challenges familiar assumptions about authority. Who controls the system? Who controls the information? Who interprets the evidence?
Who decides what counts as real? And what happens when the intelligence operating within the system no longer fits the categories we created to describe it?
On Hybrid Genies, we bring these three conversations together because each one points toward the same larger issue. Humanity is entering an era in which intelligence itself—human, artificial, or nonhuman—has become a central force shaping our future.
The real question may no longer be whether we will encounter forms of intelligence beyond the familiar human mind.
The more important question may be whether we recognize them clearly enough to understand what they are doing.
McCARTHYISM, ROY COHN AND THE AMERICAN WITCH HUNT
Orwell published 1984 in 1949, just as the United States entered its own period of political fear, loyalty investigations, and public accusation. Within a few years, Senator Joseph McCarthy became the most visible symbol of a broader anti-communist campaign known as McCarthyism.
The movement reached far beyond McCarthy himself. Congressional committees, federal loyalty programs, private blacklists, and public accusations placed government employees, teachers, writers, scientists, actors, directors, and union members under suspicion.
Careers could collapse because of an allegation, an association, or a refusal to name other people. Hollywood studios blacklisted performers and writers accused of communist affiliations, while federal agencies investigated employees for political beliefs and personal relationships.
The period also included the Lavender Scare, during which the federal government expelled thousands of employees because officials believed homosexuality made them vulnerable to blackmail or proved moral unfitness. The campaign demonstrates how quickly a political security apparatus can expand from investigating conduct to policing identity, association, and private life.
One of McCarthy’s most important and controversial associates was Roy Cohn, a young New York attorney who became chief counsel to McCarthy’s Senate investigative subcommittee in 1953. Cohn helped drive aggressive investigations into alleged communist influence inside the federal government and became a central figure in the televised Army–McCarthy hearings of 1954.
Those hearings helped expose McCarthy’s methods to a national audience. Americans watched accusations, intimidation, and political maneuvering unfold on television, and McCarthy’s public support began to collapse. The Senate formally censured him later that year.
The comparison with 1984 does not require claiming that 1950s America had become Orwell’s Oceania. It had not. American institutions ultimately pushed back against McCarthy; journalists challenged him; courts and elected officials resisted parts of the campaign; and voters could openly criticize the government.
The parallel lies instead in the mechanisms Orwell warned about: fear used to demand conformity, accusations replacing evidence, language dividing citizens into loyal and disloyal camps, and institutions pressuring people to denounce others in order to protect themselves.
McCarthyism also demonstrates why censorship and information control rarely begin with someone announcing that free thought must end. They usually begin with claims of emergency, national security, protection, or social necessity.
Once fear becomes the organizing principle, the question can quietly change from What did this person actually do? to What does this person believe, whom do they know, and are they one of us?
That is precisely the kind of transition Orwell wanted readers to recognize before it became normal.

THE INTERVIEW ~ KNAPP, BIGELOW, VALLEE & KELLEHER
The interview’s big shift is this: they are no longer treating UFOs as merely machines in the sky. Bigelow, Vallée and Kelleher increasingly describe a phenomenon that affects consciousness, perception, physiology, psychology and possibly culture itself. Kelleher says NIDS/AAWSAP studied UFO effects on people as a continuum—physiological, psychological and paranormal—not just aircraft performance. Bigelow says their research also drew on clairvoyance, precognition and remote viewing.
Bigelow goes further, saying he thinks the intelligence involved is essentially telepathic. His wording is striking: he says he thinks it is “pretty much 100% telepathic,” and that he does not know of ordinary conversation happening any other way.
Vallée’s key point is that the beings witnesses see may not be the real controllers. Around 51–52 minutes, after discussing biologics and creatures, he asks, “What about the controllers?” and says the beings in those cases were not controlling the craft. He then moves the discussion toward psychic communication and asks what kind of consciousness the controlling intelligence represents.
That connects directly to another of Vallée’s arguments. He compares reported entities across several cases and asks why supposedly extraterrestrial beings would breathe our air, walk normally in Earth gravity, have two arms and two legs, display readable facial expressions, and communicate psychically. He is questioning whether every being described in a UFO encounter really evolved independently on some distant planet.
Vallée also says he trusts people who tell him bodies have been recovered, while carefully saying he personally has not held the necessary clearances. He discusses the Trinity case and says he believes living creatures were present there. That is his stated belief based on witnesses and sources, not something he claims to have personally verified inside a classified program.
Skinwalker Ranch pushes the conversation even farther away from simple spacecraft. Kelleher describes an incident where several people looked at the same object through comparable night-vision equipment and later reported seeing different things. They explicitly ask what that means for perception and consciousness. Bigelow then says the phenomenon may do more than transmit information—it may apparently cause chains of events that humans initially think they initiated themselves.
That leads to Bigelow’s most important statement in the interview. When Knapp asks what all these apparently unrelated phenomena might mean, Bigelow says he thinks humanity is undergoing a “conditioning process going back eons of time,” accelerating in the modern era. He says repeated interactions and demonstrations may increase awareness and elevate the collective consciousness of an intelligent species until people realize much more is happening than the immediate environment around them. Then he says that, once humanity really understands what is going on, communication may begin.
So Bigelow’s model is not:
Aliens suddenly land and disclose themselves.
It is closer to:
An intelligence interacts with humanity repeatedly over very long periods, gradually changing what we can perceive and understand until direct communication becomes possible.
There is another remarkable leap near the end. Vallée questions why technology capable of extraordinary travel would simply crash in a field. The group openly entertains the possibility that some crashes may have been intentional, designed to leave hardware behind so humans would recover it, study it, and learn. They even raise Roswell as a hypothetical example. They explicitly connect this idea to a long-term control or disclosure process.
The other theme you should keep in your head is this:
Disclosure does not solve the mystery.
Knapp says you could show people bodies and craft and still not know where they came from, why they are here, how long they have been here, or what their relationship with us is. He describes the Skinwalker-type intelligence as apparently precognitive, unpredictable, and visible only when it allows itself to be seen.
The 8 things to remember for the show
- UFOs + consciousness are one problem now, not two.
- Bigelow thinks communication is essentially telepathic.
- The beings may not be the controllers.
- Vallée questions why the beings appear so compatible with Earth and humans.
- The human experiencer is part of the evidence—body, mind, and perception.
