In the Eastern Mediterranean, Romans won rule of the provinces Alexander, Ptolemy & Seleucid created. In 66 BCE, Floris, Roman governor of Judea, sent soldiers to Jerusalem’s upper market to kill all Jews they met. They killed 3,600 people, “plunged into every house & slaughtered the inmates.”

Roman general POMPEY, sought control of the Hasmonean empire as key to run the Eastern Mediterranean. He heard delegations from Hyrcanus, Aristobulus & the Sanhedrin rabbis. Each delegation asked Rome to intervene in their favor. When Pompey got to Jerusalem, Hyrcanus’ army withdrew & Aristobulus surrendered but his army held the Temple against Pompey for 2 two months. But when Pompey took the Temple he killed 12,000 of Jews within. Pompey entered (desecrated) Sanctuary where priests kept worshipping even as the Romans burst in & killed them. Pompey expected a statue of the Jewish god, but, of course, saw no statue & left the Temple intact.

Yohanan ben Zakkai & the Jewish PEACENIKS urged acceptance of inevitable Roman rule & negotiate religious freedom within Roman rule. The independence faction–ZEALOTS–fought the Peaceniks to force them to join the anti-Roman revolt. The Peaceniks saw Roman political control as inevitable and wanted to negotiate religious freedom within Roman rule. Jerusalem’s Zealots & Peaceniks fought in the city; Zealots assassinated people like Yohanan who sought peace & compromise with Rome. Zealots won the house-to-house civil war & burned the records-of debt-documents. Romans & Syrians in nearby Caesarea retaliated & killed thousands of Jews among them. Jews throughout Judea re-retaliated & killed Romans & Syrians among them.

To stop independence movements spread to other provinces, Rome sent General VESPASIAN & 60,000 soldiers to Jerusalem. They trapped the Jews in Jerusalem & said they’d be spared if they surrendered but the 6 Zealot armies from each neighborhood refused. They stopped Jews trapped within the city–people starving from Roman control of the countryside–from fleeing the city. Romans caught Jews who escaped Jerusalem, & cut open the captured escapees’ guts to find gold & Jewels. Romans tortured then crucified Jewish captives & displayed them in a ring around the city. Yohanan escaped Jerusalem disguised as a corpse in a bier of rotting meat.

In 67 BCE, the Roman governor of Judea invaded the Temple for its treasures. Temple Captain ELEAZAR and his Zealots attacked the Romans in Jerusalem, forced them to retreat to the west end of Jerusalem & offered them safe passage if they gave up their weapons.  Roman Commander METLIUS agreed to the Zealot terms. But when the Romans disarmed, Eleazar’s men killed them all except Metilius, who agreed to circumcision & to convert to JudaismCESTIUS, Syria’s Roman governor marched a large force toward Jerusalem; it burned Jewish villages & killed all Jews in his path.  Zealots counterattacked & killed 515 Roman soldiers.

AGRIPPA II, a Jewish administrator worked for Rome but led the Peaceniks, signed a peace treaty with Rome would pardon the Rebels if they disarmed & and vowed allegiance to Rome.  But when Agrippa’s emissaries returned to Jerusalem, the Zealots attacked them. Cestius’ army captured Jerusalem suburbs, burned the Temple gate, then retired to negotiate with Jews from safe quarters with secure supply lines.  Cestius sought to withdraw & avoid further Roman losses. But the lightly armored Zealots attacked Cestius’ army & killed many heavily armored Romans as they withdrew through the narrow defiles from the hills of Jerusalem towards the Mediterranean.   Cestius lost 5,300 infantry, 480 cavalry, catapults, battering rams & siege machines.

TITUS, ROME’S FUTURE EMPEROR CRUSHED THE JEWS: Roman Emperor Nero sent TITUS (son of Vespasian, who was Emperor after Nero) to crush the Jews. In 68 BCE, Nero died & VESPASIAN BECAME EMPEROR.   VESPASIAN, TITUS & THEIR LINE RULED ROME. THE VESPACIANS CHARTERED THEIR DYNASTY AS HEROICALLY KILLING JEWS & MADE THIS THE BASIS FOR THE ANTI-SEMITISM ROMANS SPREAD TO THE WORLD SINCE. Rome could counter the humiliation Eleazar inflicted on them only by thorough punishment of the city, so the Romans took Jerusalem, burned the Temple & cut throats of all whom they didn’t take as slaves.

In 54 BCE, the Roman Crassus looted the Temple treasury & Jews again revolted. Romans subdued them again in 43. The Romans ruled Judea from Syria & appointed a local Governor for Judea.  The Governor let Jews select a High Priest for the Temple and a King of Jews. In 36 the obedient Jews choose Herod, a descendant of the forced Edomite converts to Judaism who did as Rome told him.  Herod ruled for Rome until 4 BCE.

Jerusalem no longer had a Jewish King & was a mere province administrated by a Roman Procurator Pontius PILATE, who arrived in 26 CE to quell Jewish riots against Rome.  Pilate brought Roman troops, coins with images of the Temple–seen by the Jews as blasphemous images–to use in the temple.
