Science Thread, Part Two
Researchers who study contact experiencers ask the wrong question. They ask whether the experience happened. A better question asks what equipment a human body would require to receive such an experience, and where that equipment would sit.
We come at this from two directions that meet in the middle. Sasha has spent decades inside anthropology, consciousness research, and clinical practice, and he studied under Stanislav Grof alongside John E. Mack, who spent the last years of his life taking experiencer testimony seriously enough to risk his Harvard chair over it. Janet has lived as a contact experiencer since infancy. Sasha proposes the mechanism that follows. We present it as a hypothesis, bold and testable, and we mark the boundary between documented physics and the leap beyond it.
The documented floor
Four forces govern the physical universe. The strong force binds atomic nuclei. Electromagnetism moves light and charge. The weak force drives radioactive decay. Gravity holds the galaxies.
Gravity ranks as the runt of that family by a margin the mind struggles to hold. Compared with electromagnetism, gravity measures weaker by close to forty orders of magnitude, a one followed by forty zeros. A refrigerator magnet lifts a paperclip against the pull of an entire planet, and that homely fact demonstrates the imbalance every day in every kitchen.
Physics has wrestled with this gap for a century. The search for a unified theory keeps stalling at the same wall: gravity refuses to sit at the table with the other three. Some theorists propose extra spatial dimensions, and they suggest gravity appears weak here because most of its strength leaks elsewhere.
Hold that idea. It matters for what follows.
Two more documented pieces belong on the floor. Dark matter comprises the large majority of matter in the universe, and physicists infer its presence through gravitational effects while every direct detection attempt comes up empty. The occipital cortex, meanwhile, sits at the back of the human skull and serves as the primary visual processing center of the brain.
The hypothesis
Sasha leaned forward when he laid this out, and his excitement filled the room.
“There are receptors on the membranes, particularly in the occipital cortex,” he explained, tapping the back of his own skull, “that are miniature dark matter, dark hole modules.”
His reason for placing them there begins with gravity’s weakness. Access to other dimensions would require bringing gravity into balance with the other two major forces, and a bridge of that kind demands enormous amplification. “Gravity is very, very weak,” he stressed, drawing the word out. “It has to be amplified up.”
A structure capable of that amplification would work at extreme scales, either the very large or the very small. The human skull rules out the very large. So the modules sit at the small end, tiny enough to touch the level where space itself turns grainy, arranged along membranes in the visual cortex.
Tuning
The second move interests us more than the first, because one of us has lived on the receiving end of it a whole life long.
“In most people, we’re tuned into this planet,” Sasha said, and then his voice warmed as he turned toward his wife of many years. “But there are a few people, like Janet and others, who have direct access through these m-spaces, these dark, small, miniature holes. They can access other dimensions. Other people can understand what they’re doing, and they don’t have that direct access themselves.”
That distinction reframes the experiencer. Contact stops looking like fantasy and starts looking like hardware. A radio tuned to a distant station receives a real broadcast, and a radio built for one band receives silence from all the others while the signal continues to fill the room.
Janet’s own record fits the description. Contact began in infancy. She has carried it through every decade since, through the Sitchin years, through Johnston Atoll, through the thousand-plus episodes we have produced together. The experiences arrive with a texture that separates them from imagination the way a phone call separates itself from a daydream.
Vision, and why the location fits
The placement of these modules in the visual cortex rather than elsewhere in the brain answers something experiencers report across cultures and centuries. Contact arrives as vision. People see. The imagery comes complete, in color, with spatial depth, and it carries information the receiver had no way to hold beforehand.
If the receiving structures sit inside the visual processing center, then the incoming signal enters the brain already in visual currency. The system renders what it receives using the machinery built for rendering. That explains the form the experience takes, and it explains why experiencers reach for the language of sight when they describe events that reached them through no ordinary eye.
The pattern nests
The mechanism ties back to the formula that opened this series. The mathematics of each subpart mirrors the mathematics of the whole, the pattern repeats at every magnification, and structure freezes into form at each level.
“Fractals of something bigger and bigger and bigger,” Sasha marveled, his hands widening with each repetition. “It freezes at every level.”
A micro-hole on a neuronal membrane and a black hole at the center of a galaxy would then represent one design wearing two sizes. Consciousness would access itself through self-similar windows, all the way up and all the way down, with the human nervous system serving as one rung on a ladder that continues past both ends of our perception.
We find that idea beautiful, and beauty proves nothing. The value of a hypothesis lies in what it invites. This one invites measurement.
Where the leap begins
Honesty about the boundary strengthens the case rather than weakening it. Gravity’s weakness stands as documented physics. Dark matter’s dominance stands as documented astronomy. The occipital cortex as visual processor stands as documented neuroscience.
The dark-matter receptor on the neuronal membrane belongs to Sasha, and it awaits its evidence.
We present it as a hypothesis so that curious readers can test it and skeptics find honest ground to stand on. Mack earned his standing by refusing to overclaim, and we intend to keep that discipline.
One piece of supporting evidence does exist. Electromagnetic activity in the occiput continues through sleep, and it runs whether or not the sleeper knows anything about it. The channel stays open around the clock.

Janet takes naps. Forty years of taking them, and she has described the practice a thousand times without once explaining the mechanism, because she lacked one. Sasha handed her the explanation this week in a single observation, and the observation reorganized our understanding of a life we have shared for decades.
He held up a hand to stop the conversation, urgency crowding his voice. “Let me just take another step forward before I lose this.”
Then he gave it. “The electromagnetic activity in the back of the occiput continues even when the person is asleep and doesn’t know what’s going on. It goes on. Just because you’re asleep doesn’t mean that stuff ever stops. You’re just not aware of it.”
That fact carries more weight than its plainness suggests.
What sleep switches off
The frontal cortex handles deliberation, planning, self-narration, and the running commentary most people mistake for their entire mind. It builds arguments, weighs options, and maintains the story of the self. It also powers down during sleep, and its withdrawal accounts for the loose logic of dreams and the absence of the inner critic between the pillow and the alarm.
The occipital region follows different rules. Its activity persists through every stage of sleep, and it maintains the same rhythms it holds while the eyes stay open. Whatever that structure does, it does around the clock.
Sasha builds his case on exactly that contrast, and he landed it with the satisfaction of a man closing a circuit. “That’s why it takes place not in the frontal cortex, but in the occipital membrane.”
A capacity that depended on conscious effort would fade the moment consciousness faded. This one holds steady. The equipment runs as hardware, built into the architecture, indifferent to whether anyone stands at the console.
The bridge
Here the model reaches its sharpest point, and here it separates the general population from people like Janet.
Everyone runs the process. Every human skull houses the same structures conducting the same activity through every hour of every night. The receiving continues in all of us.
The rare skill lies in bridging the gap. “In people like Janet,” Sasha said, softening, “she knows how to bridge the gap and access both.”
Some people learn to hold both channels at once, waking awareness and the occipital line together, and they carry material across from one side to the other. The rest sleep through a broadcast their own bodies receive.
That reframe honors both sides of the experiencer question. It grants that contact reaches everybody, which fits the reports of ordinary people who stumble into a single vivid night once and spend decades wondering. It also explains why so few build a life around it. The signal arrives for all. Access to the signal arrives for some.
What Janet calls downloads
Janet listened to her husband finish, and her face changed as forty years of practice snapped into focus. She picked up the thread in her own voice.
“That’s what I do when I do a reset, when I’m feeling overwhelmed in my waking world,” she said, delight rising in her. “I go, I’m gonna go take a nap. And when I get into that zone, that’s exactly what’s happening. I call it downloads.”
Overwhelm arrives, as it does for anyone who runs a media enterprise, a farm, a cat colony, a household with a sister who needs daily care, and a research program spanning four books. My waking world floods. I recognize the state, I announce the nap, and I go.
“I wake up with clarity, and I wake up refreshed,” she added. “The shortest is thirty minutes, but usually an hour to two hours is long enough for me to reset and carry on.”
Thirty minutes marks my floor. The longer session does the fuller job. I drop past the frontal chatter into the zone, material arrives, and I hold it when I open my eyes. The word download matches the experience, because information transfers, complete and organized, ready for use.
The refreshment comes as a side effect rather than the purpose. My body rests, and my nervous system stops the labor of holding two channels apart while pretending to run on one. Alignment costs less energy than separation.
Under the model, the nap works as deliberate input switching. Janet stands the frontal cortex down so the occipital line can come forward. The channel that ran all along at last reaches an audience. That accounts for the thirty-minute threshold and for the longer session that lets the exchange complete.
Testimony and theory meet
Our household has run a natural experiment for decades without labeling it as one. Sasha built the theory from anthropology, consciousness studies, and physics. Janet supplied the lived case from infancy forward, through the childhood contact in Avalon, through the Sitchin years, through everything since.
Each half needs the other. Theory without a witness stays a diagram. Testimony without a mechanism stays a story. Together they produce something a researcher can work with, and something a skeptic can attack on honest ground, which serves us both.
The claim reduces to three parts. The occipital structures run around the clock, and documented electrophysiology supports that. Those structures may function as receivers, and we mark that as a hypothesis. Certain people learn to bridge into the process while awake, and we offer Janet’s forty-year practice as one data point among the many that experiencers worldwide have reported and that researchers keep declining to gather.
An invitation

Take the nap. Enter it with a question rather than a demand, keep paper within reach of the bed, and record whatever arrives during the first minute after waking before the frontal cortex resumes its narration and edits the material into sense.
Most people will collect fragments. Some will collect more. The equipment sits in every skull, the practice costs an hour, and the results belong to whoever does the work.
The gap between the signal that runs and the awareness that reaches it defines the whole question. We spent a morning arguing about agency and discovered we had circled that same gap the entire time. The formula generates possibility around the clock. Waking up to it remains the move each person makes alone.
