We’ve Always Been Here – Trans and Intersex Truths

From Level Zero to Living Light
Part Two: We’ve Always Been Here – Trans and Intersex Truths
By Janet Kira Lessin

There is nothing new about trans and intersex people.

They are not a modern invention. They are not a product of social media. They are not confused.

They are ancient. Sacred. Natural.

And they have always been here.

I was born in 1954. I have known transgender people all my life. Some knew who they were as children. Some transitioned later. Others simply existed in-between, undefined by the binaries that society clings to.

We didn’t always have the language for it. But we had the presence. We had the people. We had the knowing.

This article is not about politics. It’s about presence. History. Truth.

🌎 Across Time, Across Cultures

Gender diversity isn’t just ancient—it’s global.

Many indigenous societies embraced what the West now calls “nonbinary” or “trans” individuals as sacred third genders or spiritual emissaries:

  • In India, the Hijra community has existed for millennia.
  • Among Native American tribes, the Two-Spirit identity is honored as a union of masculine and feminine energies.
  • In Samoa, fa’afafine are embraced as a recognized gender identity.
  • In Mesopotamia, priestesses of Inanna were often gender-fluid or androgynous.

These weren’t marginalized figures. They were teachers. Shamans. Healers. They carried the wisdom of both worlds.

The Western binary is not universal. It’s not eternal. It’s not even scientific. It’s just dominant—for now.

🪖 Erasure as a Weapon

When you erase a people’s existence, you make it easier to harm them.

This is the root of today’s war on trans and intersex people: pretending they’re new, or rare, or deviant.

  • Intersex children are often subjected to surgeries that prioritize aesthetics over autonomy.
  • Trans youth are denied gender-affirming care even when medically supported.
  • Laws are being proposed to ban existence in public, to silence identities in books, to criminalize compassion.

This isn’t about debate. It’s about erasure. And erasure is always the first step toward violence.

🎮 When Biology Meets Spirit

Being intersex or transgender is not a flaw. It is a facet of the divine spectrum of life.

Some are born with XXY chromosomes. Some with ambiguous anatomy. Some with a spirit that knows its truth, regardless of what society expects.

Biology is not destiny. Biology is variety.

Gender, like light, exists on a spectrum. And the soul knows who it is.

📁 Your Stories Matter

If you are trans or intersex: You belong.
You do not need to explain your existence to anyone.

You are not broken. You are not deceived. You are not alone.

You are living truth.

Your story is your power. And it is time the world listened.
