From Level Zero to Living Light
Part One: Level Zero and the War on Our People
By Janet Kira Lessin
We were supposed to be so much more by now.
Back in the golden age of science fiction, we imagined a world beyond racism, sexism, and narrow thinking. Gene Roddenberry envisioned a future where humans of all colors and identities served side-by-side with Vulcans and Klingons. We created characters who could change shape, change gender, and live in multiple dimensions—and no one blinked.
And yet here we are, in 2025, still fighting over bathrooms, still arguing about who belongs, and still pretending that people we’ve known forever are somehow “new” or “wrong.”
Let’s call this what it is:
Barbarism in a digital skin.
It looks modern. It feels organized.
But it’s brutal, primitive, and cruel.
🧭 What is “Level Zero”?
In science, there’s something called the Kardashev Scale—a way of measuring how advanced a civilization is by how much energy it can harness.
- A Level I civilization can control all the energy of its home planet.
- A Level II civilization controls the energy of its entire solar system.
- A Level III civilization harnesses the energy of a galaxy.
Humanity?
We haven’t even hit Level I.
We’re still at Level Zero—burning fossil fuels, hoarding resources, fighting wars, and using technology to divide, not unite.
But this article introduces another scale—one I call the Consciousness Civilization Index—how we measure our growth not just by machines but by morality, empathy, and inclusion.
On that scale, Level Zero means:
- We let fear decide policy.
- We punish diversity.
- We let hate dress up as tradition.
And nowhere is that more evident than how we treat people who don’t fit neat categories.
⚖️ Intersex People: The Sacred Spectrum We Ignore
Let me say this clearly: intersex people are real.
They are born with natural variations in sex traits—chromosomes, hormones, or anatomy—that don’t fit traditional definitions of male or female.
This isn’t fantasy. It’s biology.
Depending on how we define it, as many as 1 in 60 people may be born with intersex traits. That’s millions of people in the U.S. and over a hundred million worldwide.
And yet, most people don’t know what “intersex” even means—because society erases them.
Worse: many intersex babies and children are subjected to non-consensual surgeries to make them “fit” male or female boxes. These are often unnecessary, traumatic, and violate the child’s right to bodily autonomy.
This isn’t medical. It’s cultural.
It’s a fear of anything that doesn’t conform.
But nature doesn’t conform.
Nature expresses. And intersex people are a beautiful part of that expression.
🌈 Transgender People Have Always Been Here
I was born in 1954. I’ve known transgender people my whole life.
This is not new. It’s not a “trend.” It’s not confusion.
It is true. It is ancient. It is human.
Transgender people are not dangerous. They are not broken.
They are not threatening your children.
They are your children. Your coworkers. Your neighbors. Your soul tribe.
Disrespecting trans people is not “just an opinion.”
It is hatred, and it has no place in an evolved society.
🎯 And That Debate About Sports? Let’s Talk Logic.
One of the loudest talking points against transgender people is the debate over sports. “It’s not fair,” they say.
But fairness isn’t about chromosomes. It’s about classification.
In boxing and wrestling, we divide athletes by weight class.
In martial arts, we use belts and ranks.
In disability sports, we use skill-based divisions.
So why not create performance-based divisions that honor both fairness and inclusivity?
The truth? We can.
But some people don’t want a solution.
They want a scapegoat.
🧠 Are We Choosing This Cruelty? Or Is It Choosing Us?
We must ask: Why do so many still fall for this?
The answer lies in programming.
- Social media algorithms reward fear and division.
- Politicians use fear of “others” to consolidate power.
- AI tools tailor your news to reinforce what you already believe.
We are being manipulated—not with microchips, but memes.
Not with chains, but dopamine.
Not with truth, but emotional bait.
And it’s working.
But only if we stay asleep.
🌟 We Can Wake Up. We Can Rise.
This isn’t a hopeless story.
It’s the opening chapter of our evolution.
We rise when we acknowledge every person as sacred, no matter how they identify or their body looks.
We rise when we reject cruelty, even if it’s disguised as law.
We rise when we remember that we are one people, on one planet, dreaming of the stars.
“The only way out is up.
And the only way up is together.”
