Enki and the Naming of Earth

In the earliest records of Sumer, the planet we now call Earth was dedicated to Enki, firstborn son of Anu, Lord of the Waters, and master of the Abzu. His ancient name was Ea — “He whose home is water.” It was Ea who descended into the deep places, who knew the secrets of life hidden within the waters, and who seeded the designs that would bring forth humanity.
Because of his guardianship and his love for this world, Anu honored him by naming the planet itself after him. It became EA-RTH — Ea’s Ground, Ea’s Domain.

Birth and Lineage
Enki, whose Sumerian name was En-ki (“Lord of the Earth”) and whose Akkadian name was Ea (“He whose home is water”), was the firstborn son of Anu, sovereign of Nibiru and chief of the Anunnaki pantheon. His mother, often identified as Nammu (a great primordial sea goddess from Sirius in some traditions), gave him a deep connection to water and wisdom. From her, Enki inherited not only authority but also empathy and the gift of creation.
While his half-brother Enlil inherited the command of the heavens and air through Anu’s union with Antu, Enki was entrusted with the Abzu—the watery depths beneath both Nibiru and Earth. This division of inheritance shaped the rivalry between the brothers, with Enki becoming the master of knowledge, fertility, and the deep mysteries of creation.
Descent to Earth
When Nibiru’s atmosphere began failing, the Anunnaki sought gold to repair it. Enki, as a scientist, engineer, and lord of waters, was among the first dispatched to Earth. His mission was clear: establish bases, survey resources, and unlock the planet’s potential.
Enki descended into the Abzu of Africa, where vast gold deposits lay hidden. There, he built his house upon the waters and established Eridu, the first city, which became both his residence and the oldest recorded town of Sumer.
The ancient city of Eridu rises from the marshes near the Persian Gulf. Ziggurat temple gleams in the center with canals, boats, and people at work. Enki’s temple dominates the skyline.
Why Earth Became His Domain
Enki and the goddess Ninhursag fashion humans from clay. Enki pours water from a jar, while Ninhursag molds clay figures. Glowing DNA strands spiral through the air as the first humans awaken.
Anu recognized Enki’s loyalty and ingenuity in transforming a raw, untamed planet into a livable outpost for the Anunnaki. Enki balanced rivers, tamed floods, and mapped fertile regions. He infused the soil with seeds from Nibiru, introducing agriculture and domestic animals.
Most significantly, Enki shaped humanity itself—mixing the essence of the gods with the clay of Earth to create a hybrid capable of serving, surviving, and eventually thriving. His compassion for these creations distinguished him from Enlil, who often saw humans as disposable.
Because of these contributions, Anu decreed that Earth should bear his name:
- EA (Enki, “He of the Waters”)
- RTH (the soil, the ground, the fertile body of the world)
Thus Ea-rth — Earth — was recognized as Enki’s planet, his sacred stewardship, his living legacy.

To the Anunnaki, this was not symbolic poetry but a factual proclamation. Earth itself bore Enki’s name because the planet was entrusted to his care. He was the one who oversaw the shaping of land and water, the balancing of seas and rivers, the infusion of life into soil and seed.
Humanity, born of clay and divine essence, was likewise tied to him. Just as the land bore his name, so too did our bloodlines carry his mark.
